Favourite Podcasts

The following is a list of my favourite podcasts that I listen to on a regular basis that may or may not contribute to me questioning the foundations of my daily existence. They are not ranked in any particular order. FYI, I listen to all of these podcasts on Spotify and iTunes.

"Philosophize This" by Stephen West

Philosophize This is a podcast that attempts to take abstract philosophical ideas that are centuries old and make them more digestible for people who would otherwise not pick up a philosophy text. Interestingly, the podcast is hosted by a 28 year old guy named Stephen West from Seattle and "not a 55 year old professor with a prosthetic hip". In my opinion, Stephen is truly talented at the work he does as he takes these extremely complex and sophisticated sets of theories raised by philosophers like Emmanuel Kant, Simone de Beauvoir, Adam Smith, David Hume & Heidegger, and the list goes on and is able to relay this information in a way that we ca derive practical utility in today's day and age. It truly is a valuable educational resource, and its free.

If you are into questioning things like consciousness, freedom of speech, authenticity, human suffering, the meaning of responsibility, etc. you will really dig his podcasts. Check it out!

My favourite episodes include: "Kant on Limits of Knowledge"; "How to Win an Argument"; "Peter Singer on Effective Altruism"; "Heidegger on Authenticity"; "Simone de Beauvoir on Responsibility".

"The Savvy Psychologist" by Dr. Ellen Henrickson

Obviously I would listen to anything psychology related- always up my alley. The Savvy psychologist is hosted by Dr. Ellen Henrickson who's mission is to "Meet life's challenges with evidence-based research, a sympathetic ear, and zero judgement". I would say she's doing a pretty good job at it.

What I love about this podcast is the fact that Dr. Henrickson relays information in a way that is easy to follow along. It is like reading a self-help book, just omit the reading part. The fact that she uses evidence-based research does not compromise her way of communicating that information, as you don't need a PhD to understand it. I reckon this podcast can help anybody no matter what age, profession or level of education you possess.

My favourite episodes include: " 7 Beliefs of Emotionally Healthy People"; "5 Ways to Be More Patient and Less Annoyed"; "How to be an Amazing Listener".

"Métis in Space" by Molly Swain & Chelsea Vowel

Métis in Space is a podcast hosted by two Métis ladies from the Canadian prairies named Molly and Chelsea who review the science- fiction genre featuring Indigenous peoples from a decolonized perspective. What I find really interesting about this podcast is the fact that it takes a genre like science fiction - where writers make imaginary worlds based on their interpretations of particular ethnic groups and attempt to decolonize it from an Indigenous perspective. Molly and Chelsea also happen to be major nerds (which I find relatable) and they are really funny.

My favourite episodes include: "Cowboys and Aliens" (Season 1); "Avatar" (Season 2); "Atlantis- The Lost Empire" (Season 3); "The Dead Lands" (Season 4).

Professor Buzzkill by Joseph Coohill

Professor Buzkill, otherwise known as Joseph Coohill is a modern historian of Northern Ireland and Britain. Professor buzzkill attempts to debunk some of the historical myths that are so deeply embedded in our culture. The podcast takes one myth per week and tries to showcase the importance behind the history of that myth. The podcast is also split up into full on episodes and mini-myths that are shorter episodes. I find it borderline embarrassing how many of these myths I have bought into, but its all good because it's all about learning.

My favourite episodes: "Vikings Didn't Wear Horned Helmets into Battle", "Hitler and the Volkswagen", "The Irish Slaves Myth"; "Dunkirk", "The Cause of the Civil War", "The JKF Legacy".
